Why I Don't Dream

If its true that dreams are where humans work out their metaphors (ie: their metaphoric interpretation of reality) then it stands to reason that the more complex your dreams, the more disconnected you are from reality.

Let me state that again. Dreams are metaphors. They are your brains way of seeing (art is seeing through metaphor as science is seeing through evidence and fact as religion is seeing through intuition and guesswork) truth. Your brain needs to see through metaphor. Just like if you are having trouble understanding Nietzsche's "abyss" you might read a short story about a canyon (the movie "Garden State" was something like this …. hinting at the problem of meaninglessness).

In your dreams therefor you work out the metaphor. Translate it into your brain's way of seeing.

The more complex your dreams, the more translation you need.

My dreams are about my dogs eating. Your dreams are about your parents floating in clouds with eyes made of small pieces of the dog's collar you had growing up. Do you see the difference?

Now you might not agree with me or believe that my dreams are simple. You aren't there. But whether you believe it or not, the commonsense analysis still stands. Those who have worked out reality, dream less …. dream in less complex ways.

We live in a society that has for thousands of years perverted our connection between mind and reality. From Christianity (intended to be a political cult) to Postmodern Philosophy our "greatest" ideas have worked to cover over commonsense reality and provide for us a subjective interpretation of the world where objectivity should exist. Fat people see themselves skinny and skinny see themselves fat. Housewives imagine that they are happy and great thinkers kill themselves. There is no answer to the subjectivity that takes the place of commonsense realism. It is an evil perpetrated by laziness.

Either way, the comment about dreams is still interesting whether or not you think the world has become more fantasy-based and whether or not you believe my dreams are simple.

Think about your own dream life. Translate if you want the bicycle seat or the dark cave or the clouds that descend from the sky to kill you. But measure the complexity, if you can, and decide if it means something else.
